Description
Reed-Brenner 1450 is a Gould Inc. dollar-sized experimental pattern in the RB-1400 alloy family. Positioned between the isolated RB-1400 and the closely spaced RB-1500 cluster, RB-1450 represents an intermediate composition that bridges the gap between two alloy concepts. The fifty-unit spacing from RB-1400 to RB-1450 and then another fifty units to RB-1500 indicates a relatively broad compositional sweep, in contrast to the five-unit fine resolution seen in the RB-1350-1360 range. The Gould experimental program was conducted during a period of intense Congressional interest in coinage reform: the 1973 Coinage Act authorized the Mint to study a smaller dollar, and by 1977-78 the experimental program was in full swing with multiple contractors submitting alloy proposals. Gould's submissions competed directly with those from INCO (the International Nickel Company), which also produced an extensive series of experimental dollar patterns cataloged in the RB reference.
Rarity Notes
