Description

Pollock-5445 is the second Gould Inc. dollar-sized experimental pattern to carry a Pollock catalog number, and — like RB-1515 — it is one of only two Gould compositions produced in both business-strike and proof versions. The dual distinction of Pollock recognition and proof production makes P-5445 one of the most important pieces in the Gould experimental series. Its Pollock designation (alongside P-5425) reflects its significance in the broader pattern coinage canon, while the existence of a proof version (P-5445 PF) demonstrates that the Mint considered this alloy composition worthy of premium demonstration striking. The convergence of these two markers of significance — Pollock cataloging and proof production — indicates that P-5445 may represent Gould's strongest candidate alloy, the composition the company featured most prominently in its presentation to the Mint. The business-strike version of P-5445 (this entry) provides the baseline performance data, while the companion proof demonstrates the alloy's capacity for collector-quality finish.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Very rare. No NGC census image available for the MS version. As one of only two Pollock-numbered Gould compositions and one of only two with proof versions, P-5445 is among the most sought-after Gould experimental pieces.
