Coin Details
Description
Reed-Brenner 1355 is a Gould Inc. dollar-sized experimental pattern positioned between RB-1350 and RB-1360 in the tightly clustered 1300-series alloy group. The five-unit increment between RB-1350, RB-1355, and RB-1360 represents the finest granularity of composition variation in the entire Gould dollar series, indicating that the metallurgists had narrowed in on a particularly promising range and were testing at maximum resolution. In metallurgical research, this level of precision typically occurs late in the optimization process, after broader sweeps have identified the most promising compositional zone. The Gould program thus was a methodical, multi-stage research effort: broad initial screening (represented by the widely spaced major groups), followed by fine-resolution testing within the most promising ranges (represented by the tightly spaced clusters).
Rarity Notes
R-7. Very rare. NGC census records an image for this piece, indicating at least one certified specimen.
