CU-1C-1974D-02 Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged as CU-1C-1974D-02 by the Cuds on Coins attribution team, this variety represents the second documented cud for the 1974 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. The coin exhibits the characteristic features of a complete rim break: a raised, featureless blob of extruded metal at the rim's edge where a portion of the die fractured and fell away, leaving the striking chamber open at that point. The design elements normally present in the affected area — whether portions of Lincoln's portrait, the date, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, or the rim denticles — are partially or wholly replaced by this smooth, amorphous raised area. CU-1C-1974D-02 is distinguished from CU-1C-1974D-01 and the subsequent eleven entries by its unique position along the coin's circumference and the geometric profile of the break. The sequential numbering in the Cuds on Coins system reflects the order of cataloging rather than the chronological sequence of die failures during production, so CU-1C-1974D-02 was simply the second specimen submitted and attributed for this date. With thirteen total cud varieties documented for the 1974-D cent, this date provides an unusually comprehensive dataset for studying rim failure patterns on Lincoln Memorial cent dies. The high cud count correlates strongly with the date's massive mintage — at approximately 4.24 billion pieces, Denver's 1974 cent production demanded the use of an extraordinary number of die pairs, and the statistical probability of rim fractures across that population of dies was correspondingly elevated. Each die pair that developed a cud continued striking coins with the characteristic raised blob until the damage was noticed by quality control personnel and the die was removed from service.
