(1970s) Medal John Quincy Adams 34mm Type-1 Peace and Friendship
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 34mm bronze medal honors John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, and features the Type 1 version of his Peace and Friendship medal design. The obverse carries a bust of Adams adapted from the original portrait die engraved by Moritz Furst, who created Adams's medal portrait during the president's single term in office from 1825 to 1829. The Type 1 designation refers to the specific die state or reverse pairing used for this striking, distinguishing it from later die combinations that may show subtle differences in the Peace and Friendship reverse design. The reverse features the standard clasped-hands motif with crossed tomahawk and peace pipe designed by John Reich, maintaining visual continuity with the medals of earlier presidents. John Quincy Adams came to the presidency with the most distinguished pre-presidential diplomatic career in American history, having served as Minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain, as well as Secretary of State under James Monroe. His presidency was marked by ambitious internal improvement programs and the controversial circumstances of his election by the House of Representatives in 1824 after no candidate achieved an Electoral College majority. The 34mm bronze format represents the more compact and affordable version of the presidential medal, designed for collectors building complete presidential sets. The undated medal follows the standard Mint convention for the Peace and Friendship series, with the 1970s production period reflecting when these particular examples were struck.
Rarity Notes
Common. Produced in quantity by the U.S. Mint for public sale. The Type 1 designation distinguishes this die combination from variants, but both remain readily available to collectors.
