Description
The 1970 (S) Proof Kennedy Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver Clad 1965-1970 series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.6 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 55% of production. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal โ a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. The final year of silver-content Kennedy Half Dollars for circulation. Only the 1970-D was struck for circulation; the 1970-S appears only in proof and mint sets. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $28. Struck in 40% silver, 60% copper, weighing 11.5 grams, 30.61 mm in diameter, with a 150 reeds edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6806.
