Among the most recently discovered varieties in this group, SKH-1c-1969D-09 was not documented until December 2, 2024 — nearly six years after the previous 1969-D spiked head addition. This extended gap between discoveries illustrates that the variety census for even well-searched dates is never truly closed. New specimens continue to surface as collectors examine previously unexamined rolls, as coin shows bring unfamiliar material to knowledgeable eyes, and as online attribution communities expand the pool of active searchers. The 1969-D cent has circulated for over five decades, passing through countless hands — but a spiked head visible only under magnification can easily escape notice for generations. The December 2024 documentation of variety 09 confirms that patient searching continues to yield results for those who examine coins methodically. As with all spiked heads in this series, a die gouge or crack near Lincoln's portrait created a recessed channel in the die face that fills with metal under striking pressure, producing the raised spike on the finished coin.
