SKH-1c-1969D-07 Spiked Head
Error
Description
Documented on May 11, 2018, SKH-1c-1969D-07 stands apart from the other 1969-D spiked head varieties by exhibiting a secondary die anomaly: a reverse die chip noted in the catalog comments as the "black arrow" feature. This combination makes SKH-07 a dual-interest variety — the obverse carries the characteristic spike projecting from Lincoln's head (a die gouge or crack that fills with metal during striking), while the reverse displays a die chip, which is a small fragment of die steel that has broken away from the die surface, leaving a void that produces a raised dot or irregular blob on the struck coin. The "black arrow" notation likely refers to the position indicator used in catalog photography to identify the chip's location on the reverse. Die chips on the reverse of Lincoln Memorial cents most commonly appear near lettering or within the architectural detail of the Memorial building, where sharp angles in the design concentrate stress. The presence of both an obverse spiked head and a reverse die chip on the same coin does not necessarily indicate a causal relationship — they may represent independent damage events on their respective dies that happened to be paired in the press simultaneously.
