CU-1C-1967-05 Rim Cud
Error
Description
Designated CU-1C-1967-05 and specifically classified as a rim cud, this fifth documented cud variety for the 1967 Lincoln cent represents a die fracture confined primarily to the peripheral rim zone without extending deeply into the adjacent design field. All cuds originate at the rim by definition, but the rim cud label emphasizes that this particular break is modest in scale, removing only the outermost edge of the die rather than a broad swath of the die face. Rim cuds on the Lincoln cent can be challenging to detect because the coin's normal rim is already raised and robust, and a small cud may add only marginally to the rim's profile. Confident identification typically requires 5x to 10x magnification and careful comparison against the normal rim contour on the opposite side of the coin. Despite their subtlety, rim cuds are fully documented varieties because each represents a genuine die failure — a structural event on an individual working die that permanently altered its output. The 1967 cent was struck during the final year of the Coinage Act of 1965 no-mint-mark mandate, with 3,048,667,100 business strikes manufactured at the Philadelphia Mint. Beginning in 1968, mint marks returned to all U.S. denominations, ending the three-year experiment in mint mark suppression. Cross-referenced as CU-1C-1967-05 and attributed by Cuds on Coins. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
