Description

Fifth documented rim cud for the 1965 Roosevelt Dime, this variety preserves a major die break at the rim where part of the die's rim gutter was lost, which appears on the coin as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The 1965 date carries extraordinary numismatic significance as the first year of clad coinage following the Coinage Act of 1965, which eliminated silver from dimes and quarters due to a worldwide silver shortage that had caused widespread hoarding and melting of silver coins. Roosevelt Dimes struck in 1965 used the new copper-nickel clad composition — layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core — replacing the 90% silver alloy that had been standard since 1946. Notably, 1965 dimes bear no mint mark regardless of their facility of origin, as the Mint temporarily suspended mint marks from 1965 through 1967 to discourage hoarding by date and mint collectors. Five documented cuds for this single-year issue cataloged by Cuds on Coins indicate significant die stress during production, potentially reflecting the challenges of transitioning to new planchet metallurgy and the high production demands placed on dies to meet circulation needs during the coinage transition. The 1965 dime's position as the inaugural clad-composition Roosevelt Dime adds historical weight to any die variety from this date.
