Description

Struck in the inaugural year of the United States Mint's transition to copper-nickel clad coinage, the CU-25c-1965-03R documents a cud error on the 1965 Washington quarter. The year 1965 holds special significance in American numismatics as the first year quarters were produced without silver, a change driven by the Coinage Act of 1964 in response to a nationwide silver shortage. Quarters from 1965 carry no mint mark regardless of production facility, as the Mint temporarily removed mint marks to discourage hoarding by collectors amid the coin shortage. Cuds form when a section of the die breaks away at the rim, and the die fragment either falls free or shifts, leaving a raised featureless area on all coins subsequently struck from that damaged die.
