1964 Quarter Pattern - RB-1405, INCO
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This INCO experimental quarter carries the RB-1405 alloy designation, a variant within the 1400-series sub-family of the 1964 silver replacement testing program. The International Nickel Company's 1400-series represented the fourth major alloy family tested on quarter-denomination planchets, building on knowledge gained from the 1000, 1100, 1200, and 1300 series. By this point in the testing program, INCO's metallurgists had accumulated substantial data on how different copper-nickel alloy compositions performed under coining press conditions, allowing increasingly targeted optimization of the alloy parameters. The results of this comprehensive program directly informed the alloy specification adopted in the Coinage Act of 1965.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. The RB-1405 alloy composition survives in very limited numbers, estimated at fewer than five examples.
