Description
An experimental clad quarter bearing the RB-1110 alloy designation from the International Nickel Company's 1964 testing program. This piece is part of the 1100-series sub-group that tested a particular family of alloy compositions. The extensive scope of INCO's program reflected not just the Treasury's urgency but also INCO's desire to demonstrate that nickel-based alloys were superior to competing proposals from other metals companies, including Olin Mathieson's aluminum-based alternatives and DuPont's experimental compositions. The competitive aspect of the 1964 testing program drove each company to produce dozens of variants optimized for different performance criteria.
