Description

Experimental blank planchet RB-6050 from the INCO program, the sixth entry in the early RB-60xx subseries. This blank represents one of the later compositions in the initial group of RB-6xxx alloys, testing a formulation that built on observations from the preceding five entries. The Treasury's silver replacement study operated under extraordinary time pressure during 1964 and 1965 — silver prices continued to rise, existing coin stocks were being hoarded at an accelerating rate, and the specter of a complete breakdown in circulating coinage lent genuine urgency to the research. INCO responded to this pressure by delivering experimental materials at a pace that would have been difficult for a less well-equipped organization, leveraging their existing production infrastructure to prepare experimental planchets alongside their regular commercial output. The institutional capability that allowed INCO to produce dozens of distinct compositions in a compressed timeframe was a direct consequence of the company's century-long focus on nickel metallurgy and its extensive network of research facilities.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8. Rare experimental specimen from the later portion of the initial RB-6xxx composition group.
