1962 Confederate States Half Dollar - CSA Bronze, Bashlow Restrike
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The 1962 Bashlow Restrike of the Confederate Half Dollar in bronze is part of Robert Bashlow's Civil War centennial reproduction series that expanded beyond the cent denomination to include the half dollar design as well. Using transfer dies created from an original 1861 Confederate half dollar, Bashlow produced these bronze restrikes to meet collector demand for affordable examples of the celebrated Confederate half dollar design. The bronze composition gives this piece a warm, coppery appearance that develops an attractive brown patina over time. The obverse reproduces the standard 1861 Seated Liberty design that the original Confederate coins shared with federal half dollars, while the reverse features the distinctive Confederate shield and agricultural wreath that A.H.M. Peterson engraved for the Confederate Treasury. The bronze striking captures all design details of the transfer dies with good fidelity. Bashlow's half dollar restrikes were produced in several metals including bronze, silver, and goldine (brass), creating a collecting set that paralleled his multi-metal Confederate cent restrike program. The half dollar restrikes are considerably scarcer than the cent restrikes, as the larger format required more material and more elaborate production arrangements. These pieces document the enduring numismatic fascination with Confederate coinage during the Civil War centennial era.
Rarity Notes
