RIDB-1c-1960-07(LD) (LD) Retained Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Recorded by Cuds on Coins with a cross-reference date of February 7, 2018, RIDB-1c-1960-07(LD) identifies another retained interior die break from the 1960 Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date production at the Philadelphia Mint. In this type of die failure, an internal portion of the die face develops a fracture that allows the fragment to shift minutely under the tremendous pressure of each strike, yet the piece remains physically connected to the surrounding die steel. Coins produced from such a die exhibit a raised, irregularly textured zone where the retained fragment displaced the normal design — a telltale signature that distinguishes these pieces from both normal strikes and full cud errors. Unlike a rim cud, where the break originates at the die's edge, an interior break can appear anywhere within the design field, making each instance unique in its placement and visual character. The Large Date designation ties this die to the earlier production phase at Philadelphia in 1960. No additional cross-references have been assigned beyond the Cuds on Coins listing, and the variety represents the kind of transient die state that appeals to collectors who study the progressive deterioration of working dies across their operational lifespan.
