Description
Listed as CU-1c-1960D-05(SD) in the CudsOnCoins catalog with a documentation date of January 18, 2021, and no additional cross-reference, this rim cud appears on the 1960-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date. The relatively recent cataloging date suggests this die was either newly discovered or only recently submitted for formal documentation, expanding the known roster of 1960-D Small Date cud varieties. A rim cud represents the loss of part of the die's rim gutter: on the struck coin it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. The mechanical forces involved in cent production at the Denver Mint were substantial, and prolonged die use under these conditions inevitably led to fatigue fractures at stress concentration points near the rim. Each cud entry in the CudsOnCoins system represents a unique die, and the specific location and dimensions of the raised area distinguish CU-1c-1960D-05(SD) from other 1960-D Small Date cuds. Collectors should compare their specimens against the CudsOnCoins reference photographs to ensure proper attribution.
