Representing the sole cataloged cud for the 1956 Franklin Half Dollar, this rim die break captures a moment of die failure on a date generally recognized for better-than-average strike quality compared to some earlier years in the series. Cuds result from complete separation of a die rim section, and when the fractured piece falls away, the resulting cavity produces a raised featureless area on every subsequent strike. The 1956 Philadelphia Half Dollar was part of the later production run of Sinnock's Franklin design, which would continue through 1963 before yielding to Gilroy Roberts' Kennedy portrait.
