CU-1C-1955S-01R Cud

Description

First documented reverse cud on the 1955 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this die break formed when a section of the reverse die rim fractured and separated completely. The cavity left by the missing rim section filled with planchet metal during striking, producing the raised, featureless mass that defines a cud error. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins with the cross-reference CU-1C-1955S-01R, this variety appears on one of the more notable San Francisco cent dates of the 1950s. The 1955-S is particularly significant because San Francisco ceased cent production after this year, not resuming until 1968 — making 1955 the last S-mint Wheat Cent. This terminal status for San Francisco cent production adds considerable collector appeal to any die variety bearing the S mintmark from 1955. Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse was in its forty-sixth year of continuous service, and the dies that carried this familiar design were subject to the same mechanical fatigue that produced rim fractures at all three mints.
