Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins with the cross-reference noting a die crack on the bottom of Lincoln's coat, this variety — designated RIDB-1c-1955-12 — appears on the 1955 proof Lincoln Wheat Cent. The RIDB prefix stands for Retained Interior Die Break, distinguishing it from rim cuds (CU) and retained cuds (RCD): a retained interior die break occurs when a crack develops within the interior of the die face, away from the rim, and the cracked segment remains attached to the die body. On struck coins, this manifests as a raised line or ridge following the crack path, with possible displacement of the design on either side of the break depending on whether the fractured segment shifted during striking pressure. The associated die crack on the bottom of Lincoln's coat provides the primary visual diagnostic for locating this variety. The 1955 proof Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on polished bronze planchets (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, as part of the 378,200 proof sets produced that year. The 1955 date is particularly notable in Lincoln cent collecting due to the famous 1955 Doubled Die Obverse, and while RIDB-1c-1955-12 is a different class of die error entirely, it shares the proof format that provides the mirror-finish surfaces making interior die breaks especially visible against the reflective fields.
