Description

First documented rim cud for the 1953 Lincoln Wheat Cent, this variety was cataloged by Cuds on Coins under designation CU-1C-1953-01. A rim cud forms when a section of the die along the rim fractures and the broken piece separates, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during the striking process to produce a raised, featureless mass at the edge of the coin. The raised area obliterates whatever design detail — lettering, date digits, or rim denticles — occupied that portion of the die before the fracture occurred. The 1953 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck during the post-war economic expansion, when growing retail commerce demanded large quantities of small denomination coinage. As the first documented cud for this date, CU-1C-1953-01 establishes the baseline catalog entry, though additional cuds from 1953 may be documented in future research. The Wheat Cent design by Victor David Brenner was in its forty-fourth year of production in 1953, approaching the end of its run before the Memorial reverse replaced it in 1959. Rim cuds on Wheat Cents are actively collected both as individual die varieties and as part of the broader die break specialty, where collectors seek to assemble sets organized by date, denomination, or error type across the full spectrum of U.S. coinage.
