1950 Lincoln Wheat Cent - SKH-1c-1950-14 Spiked Head

Description

Fourteenth in the spiked head catalog for the 1950 Philadelphia Wheat Cent, SKH-1c-1950-14 is identified by Cohen Index 50-69, establishing its place in the Cohen die study framework. That fourteen spiked heads have been cataloged for a single date-mint illustrates both the high volume of 1950 cent production and the thoroughness of variety researchers who systematically examined this issue. Cohen Index numbers 50-67, 50-55, and 50-69 each represent a different working die, and the non-sequential numbering reflects the order in which anomalies were documented rather than any production sequence. Spiked heads on late-era Wheat Cents attract collectors who value a tangible record of die failure from a design series that spanned 1909 to 1958. The raised metallic projection near Lincoln's bust can vary from die to die, ranging from a fine whisker-like filament to a bold spike extending well beyond the normal portrait outline. Philadelphia Mint, bronze composition, 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
