Description

HK-505 strikes only one design, on a single side: the fifty-dollar slug side of an octagonal dollar first struck in 1915, whose die the California Medalists Society reused for the reverse of its 1950 statehood medal. It is gold-plated bronze, octagonal and 40 mm by 40 mm, with the back left blank. The centennial year it belongs to filled 1950 across the state. San Francisco held a week of festivities ending on Admission Day, September 9, staged by the Native Sons and the Native Daughters; the governor cut a 650-pound birthday cake at Sacramento's State Fair; Los Angeles staged "The California Story" in the Hollywood Bowl. A reenacted inauguration of the first governor at San Jose on December 15-17, with the pageant "So Dawned a State," was billed as the climax of three years of celebration.
