Description
Lettered "Police" beneath a view of the building, HK-7 is the silver Crystal Palace piece engraved by George Hampden Lovett for the 1853 New York exhibition, with "Crystal Palace" above the edifice. The reverse is a crowded design: a round shield with twelve stars inside a beaded circle, rays all around it, and ten flags whose staffs split the field into ten wedges, each wedge naming three countries, from Sweden, Norway and Denmark through Japan, Tartary and China to France, Switzerland and Belgium, with a star at the head of every staff. The exhibition it belongs to drew 4,800 exhibitors, with 23 foreign countries represented, and President Franklin Pierce and his Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, attended the opening. Hibler and Kappen found all four Crystal Palace medals hard to research. Silver, 40 mm.
