Description

The 1938 (D) Boone Half Dollar is a commemorative half dollar struck at the Denver Mint. With a mintage of just 2,100, this is a rare and highly sought-after issue. Authorized in 1934 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Daniel Boone, the legendary American frontiersman who blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and founded Boonesborough, Kentucky. The obverse features a bust of Daniel Boone facing left, wearing a coonskin cap and buckskin shirt, while the reverse displays Daniel Boone and Chief Blackfish standing together, with a stockade fort and the inscription PIONEER YEAR in the background. Designed by Augustus Lukeman. The final year, with only 2,100 pieces struck at each of the three mints — the lowest mintages in the Boone series. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9275.
