Description

The 1937 (S) Proof Boone Matte Half Dollar is a proof commemorative half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. With a mintage of just 5,006, this is a scarce issue sought by specialists. Authorized in 1934 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Daniel Boone, the legendary American frontiersman who blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap and founded Boonesborough, Kentucky. The obverse features a bust of Daniel Boone facing left, wearing a coonskin cap and buckskin shirt, while the reverse displays Daniel Boone and Chief Blackfish standing together, with a stockade fort and the inscription PIONEER YEAR in the background. Designed by Augustus Lukeman. Lower mintages of approximately 2,500-9,800 per mint make these among the scarcer issues.
