Description
The 1934 Proof Maryland, Matte Half Dollar is a proof half dollar from the Classic Silver Commemoratives (1892-1954) series. With a mintage of 25,015, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, each authorized by an individual act of Congress and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. Struck during the Great Depression, when mintages dropped sharply and the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Auction record: $78,000 PR63 08-28-2022 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, 30.6 mm in diameter. Cataloged as PCGS #99328.
