Description

Part of the Washington Silver Quarters 1932-1964 series, the 1934 (D) Washington Quarter - Heavy Motto is a quarter from the Denver Mint. Denver struck 3.5 million Washington quarters in 1934 in all; how many of them have the Heavy Motto is not recorded. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays an eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with olive branches below. Production resumed after a one-year gap in 1933. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck quarters. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #85796.

Rarity Notes

The Heavy Motto variety on the 1934-D is scarcer than the standard issue. Total 1934-D mintage was 3,527,200 pieces, with the Heavy Motto representing a fraction of that total. Recognized by PCGS as a distinct catalog entry.
