Description
This 1934-D Washington quarter exhibits the Heavy Motto variety, characterized by a noticeably bolder and more deeply impressed "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto above Washington's head on the obverse. The Heavy Motto results from a die that was more deeply hubbed or polished differently, producing thicker, more prominent lettering in the motto compared to standard strikes. On Heavy Motto specimens, the individual letters appear wider and more filled, with less space between them. This Denver Mint issue is identified by the D mint mark on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams with a 24.3mm diameter and reeded edge. The Heavy Motto variety on the 1934-D is scarcer than the standard variety and is recognized by both PCGS and NGC as a distinct issue.
