Description

Struck in the final year of Hermon MacNeil's Standing Liberty Quarter series before the Washington Quarter replaced it in 1932, the 1930-S holds terminal-date significance that elevates collector interest in any variety from this date-mint combination. RCD-25c-1930S-01 is the first cataloged retained cud on the 1930 (S) Standing Liberty Quarter, recording a die failure in which a fractured piece of the working die broke free from the surrounding steel but remained trapped in the die cavity during striking at the San Francisco Mint. The retained fragment impressed a raised, flat zone onto each planchet it contacted, producing the visual signature that distinguishes retained cuds from earlier-stage die cracks and pre-cuds. As the last year of production for the Standing Liberty type, the 1930 date saw limited output before the series was retired, and surviving varieties from this final San Francisco issue carry the appeal of representing the close of one of the most artistically celebrated quarter designs in American numismatics.
