Description

The 1928-M Philippine Twenty Centavos Mule was struck at the Manila Mint and carries an M mint mark on the reverse, to the left of the date. From 1907 the twenty centavos was struck lighter and smaller, 4 grams of 75 percent silver about 20 millimeters across, after the act of June 23, 1906 let the Philippine government lower the weight and fineness of its silver coins; the designs did not change. The obverse is Melecio Figueroa's young woman in a flowing gown striking an anvil with a hammer, the smoking cone of Mount Mayon behind her, with the value above and FILIPINAS below. The reverse shows the American eagle over a striped shield, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date. The recorded mintage is 100,000. No twenty centavos had been struck since 1921 and the Manila Mint had no reverse dies for it, so the whole 1928 issue was struck with a reverse die of the five centavos, a coin of nearly the same size; every 1928 twenty centavos is this mule.
