1922 Proof Dollar Pattern - J-2025, Grant
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-2025, Pollock-2215, is a proof dollar pattern from the 1922 Grant Memorial commemorative program. This pattern, numbered separately from J-2020, represents a distinct die combination or design variant for the Grant dollar. The Grant Memorial program celebrated the centennial of President Ulysses S. Grant's birth and produced one of the smaller commemorative dollar issues of the classic era, with combined mintages of approximately 10,000 pieces across the two varieties (with and without star). Laura Gardin Fraser's designs for the Grant commemoratives were widely praised, and her Grant portrait is considered one of the finest numismatic likenesses of the Civil War general. This pattern documents an alternative design concept that was evaluated alongside the adopted configuration, preserving a design path not taken in the final commemorative issue.
Rarity Notes
R-7. Extremely rare. Grant commemorative dollar patterns beyond J-2020 are very scarce.
