Description

Judd-2020, Pollock-2210, is a business-strike dollar pattern from 1922, the year the Grant Memorial commemorative dollar was issued to celebrate the centennial of Ulysses S. Grant's birth on April 27, 1822. The adopted commemorative dollar was designed by Laura Gardin Fraser, who also designed the Grant half dollar, making her the first woman to design a United States commemorative coin. The Grant dollar depicted Grant's portrait on the obverse and a log cabin birthplace on the reverse, with an authorized mintage of only 5,016 pieces (plus 5,000 with a star countermark). This pattern documents one of the design concepts evaluated before the final Grant dollar design was approved. The 1922 Grant dollar is notable for its low mintage and the historical significance of its designer, who was later passed over for the 1931 Washington quarter design in favor of John Flanagan despite winning the design competition.

Rarity Notes

R-7. Extremely rare. Grant commemorative dollar patterns are very scarce, reflecting the small scale of the commemorative program itself.
