Description
The 1922 Grant Memorial Commemorative Gold Dollar - No Star is a commemorative dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 5,000 Grant gold dollars without the star in March 1922, and the Grant Commission sold the whole gold issue. Issued in 1922 as a companion piece to the Grant Memorial half dollar, commemorating the centennial of Grant's birth. The obverse features a bust of Ulysses S. Grant facing right in military uniform, similar to the companion half dollar, while the reverse displays Grant's birthplace log cabin in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.672 grams, 15 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7458. The star was added to 5,016 of the gold dollars at the Grant Commission's request; 5,000 were struck without it.
