Description
This 1920 silver medal commemorates the opening of the Manila Mint, struck in silver as an intermediate composition between the more common bronze and the exceedingly rare gold versions. Silver examples were produced in greater numbers than gold but fewer than bronze, intended for distribution to attending officials and dignitaries of moderate rank. The medal features a portrait of President Woodrow Wilson on the obverse and commemorative text marking the Manila Mint opening on the reverse. Cataloged as HK-449 in the so-called dollar reference, this silver medal represents an important intersection of American and Philippine numismatic history. The Manila Mint was unique among U.S. branch mints as the only facility established in an overseas territory, producing Philippine peso and centavo denominations from 1920 through the Japanese occupation in 1942.
Rarity Notes
