Description

This 1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a rim cud on the reverse positioned just clockwise of 12:00. The cud formed when a section of the reverse die rim fractured completely and fell away, leaving a void that filled with metal on each subsequent strike. Cuds at the top of the reverse interrupt the rim above UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and their position relative to the lettering serves as the primary diagnostic for matching a coin to a specific failed die. The 1919-S produced an unusually large number of documented rim failures across its 139,760,000-piece mintage.
