Description
This is the 1918/7 overdate variety of the 1918-S Standing Liberty Quarter. By this date the date was part of the hub, so the overdate came from hubbing: the working die took impressions from hubs carrying two different years. The earlier date survives underneath wherever its strokes fall outside the later digits, which is why an overdate is read from the shapes that do not belong to the date as printed. The effect is in the die, so every coin struck from it carries the same remnant in the same position. Any mintage or rarity ranking given below counts the entire issue for this date and mint, not this variety: a variety comes from one die or a few, and how many coins they struck was never separately recorded. The 1918 (S) Standing Liberty Quarter - 8/7 is a quarter minted at the San Francisco Mint, within the Standing Liberty Quarters 1916-1930 series. The 1918/7-S is an overdate within the 1918-S issue: the San Francisco Mint's 1918 total of 11,072,000 quarters includes it, and no separate mintage exists for the overdate. The obverse features Liberty standing in a gateway between two walls, holding an olive branch and a shield and the reverse displays an eagle in flight. The 1918/7-S overdate is one of the most famous and valuable quarter varieties in U.S. numismatics. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.25 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5726.
