Description
The 1918 (S) Philippine Five Centavos Allen-4.08b Mule was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a reverse die made for the twenty centavos. The first five-centavo type was struck from 1903 to 1928 in copper-nickel, three parts copper to one of nickel. In 1918 San Francisco paired a five-centavo obverse with a reverse die made for the twenty centavos, which had been reduced in 1907 to nearly the same diameter; the date on that reverse is smaller than on the regular five-centavo reverse. NGC lists the coin as muled with a twenty-centavo reverse, and PCGS as Allen-4.08b and FS-901. The Director of the Mint's report gives one figure for the date, 2,780,000 five centavos struck at San Francisco in calendar year 1918, with no separate count of the mules.
