Description
Part of the Philippines Five Centavos 1903-1945 series, the 1917 (S) Philippine Five Centavos is a five centavos coin from the San Francisco Mint. The first five-centavo type was struck from 1903 to 1928 in copper-nickel, three parts copper to one of nickel, with the same pictures as the centavo: Figueroa's seated figure with anvil, hammer and Mount Mayon, and the eagle on the United States shield with the date. Philadelphia made the coins of 1903-1904 and the proofs, San Francisco those of 1916-1919 with an S, and the Manila Mint those of 1920-1921 without a mint mark and of 1925-1928 with an M. The Director of the Mint's report lists 2,300,000 pieces struck at San Francisco in calendar year 1917. Catalogue numbers: KM-164. PCGS number 90196.
