Description
San Francisco's 1916 cent production yielded this rim cud, cataloged as CU-1C-1916S-01, one year before the United States entered World War I. The 1916-S Lincoln Wheat cent is a coin of considerable interest to series collectors owing to its relatively low mintage, and the presence of a documented cud adds die-variety significance to an already noteworthy issue. A rim cud forms through progressive die fatigue: microscopic stress fractures accumulate with each strike until a crack propagates to the die's edge and part of the die's rim gutter is lost. On every subsequent impression it appears as a raised interruption in the design rim that tracks the rim's course. San Francisco struck approximately 22.51 million cents in 1916, modest output that nonetheless required dozens of working die pairs rotating through the coining presses. The "01" suffix designates this as the first confirmed rim break reported for the 1916-S cent in the CudsOnCoins catalog. Collectors pursuing cud varieties across the early Wheat cent series value pre-1920 S-mint entries for their scarcity in the surviving population.
