Description
A dual-numbered sub-variety of the Standing Liberty quarter pattern, bearing both J-1796a (indicating a compositional variant of the primary J-1796) and the alternative catalog number 1988. The "a" suffix typically denotes a striking in an alternative metal — most commonly copper — that allowed the Mint to evaluate the design's detail and overall appearance without committing silver. MacNeil's Standing Liberty design was notable for its architectural framework: Liberty stands within a crenellated gateway inspired by ancient Greek city walls, with stars visible through the opening behind her. This architectural setting was unique among American coin designs and gave the quarter a distinctive three-dimensional quality. The standing figure holds an upraised shield at the ready and extends an olive branch, embodying the American ideal of peaceful strength. MacNeil had studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in Rome, and his design reflects the Beaux-Arts tradition of integrating figurative sculpture with architectural settings. The dual numbering reflects independent classification by different pattern coin scholars.
