Description
The 1915 (S) Panama-Pacific International Exposition Commemorative Gold Fifty Dollar - Octagonal is a commemorative fifty-dollar gold coin struck at the San Francisco Mint. The San Francisco Mint struck 1,500 octagonal $50 pieces plus 9 for the Assay Commission; 855 were melted, leaving a net distribution of 645. Issued to celebrate the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, which commemorated the completion of the Panama Canal and the rebuilding of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The obverse features the helmeted head of Minerva, while the reverse displays an owl on a pine branch; on the octagonal coin a border of dolphins surrounds both designs. Designed by Robert Aitken. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 83.59 grams, 46 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7452.
