CU-1c-1909-06R Rim Cud

Description

Among the most historically significant hosts for a cud variety in the Lincoln cent series, the 1909 VDB carries this rim cud cataloged by Cuds on Coins as CU-1c-1909-06R. The 1909 VDB was the inaugural Lincoln cent, designed by Victor David Brenner, whose initials — V.D.B. — appear prominently on the reverse below the wheat stalks. Public controversy over the prominence of those initials led the Mint to remove them after a short production run, making the 1909-P VDB one of the most recognized key dates in American numismatics. In addition to the rim cud, a die crack from the rim extends right toward the wheat stalk — a secondary die failure feature that provides collectors with an additional attribution marker. As a rim cud, the die break occurs at the perimeter of the die face, producing a raised unstruck mass adjacent to the rim where the fracture removed a section of die steel. The combination of a first-year design with artisan initials, a recognized key date status, and a documented die failure makes this variety a notable crossover piece for both cud specialists and Lincoln cent date-and-mint collectors.
