1908 Repunched Date WRPD-001
ErrorDescription
Repunching on this 1908 Barber Dime shows the date punched twice with the second impression shifted, producing clear traces at 1908/908 — the 9 displays repunching to the west on its interior curve while the 08 shows repunching to the east along the inside of both digits. Charles Barber's Liberty Head dime design, struck from 1892 through 1916, relied on individual date logotypes hand-punched into each working die, and any misalignment between the first and second blows left overlapping impressions permanently engraved in the steel. This WRPD-001 die also carries obverse die clash marks visible at the nose and right of the ribbon, along with northeast-to-southwest die scratches in front of the eye and upper lip, providing secondary attribution markers. The reverse displays strong die clash marks through the upper left and right wreath and above the bow. Attributed by the Wexler Team with the cross-reference designation 1908 10c WRPD-001, no other cross-references are currently known. Repunched dates on Barber dimes from the Progressive Era reflect the handcraft nature of early twentieth-century die preparation at the Philadelphia Mint, where each die was individually finished before entering the coining press.
