1908-D Repunched Date WRPD-001
Error
Description
Showing repunching of the 1 and 8 visible south of the primary numerals, this 1908-D Barber Dime carries a repunched date designated 1908/1--8 across three attribution systems: Lawrence L-101, Flynn RPD-001, and Wexler WRPD-001. The southward displacement of the secondary impressions indicates the date punch was initially struck slightly too high, then corrected downward — leaving ghost images of the first two digits below their intended locations. Charles E. Barber's Liberty Head design, in service on dimes since 1892, graces the obverse of this Denver Mint issue. The triple attribution across Lawrence, Flynn, and Wexler provides three independent catalog numbers for cross-verification. Documentation notes that only circulated specimens have been examined, with better examples needed for thorough die marker analysis — meaning obverse and reverse markers may exist but remain unconfirmed on higher-grade coins. Repunched dates on Barber Dimes resulted from the hand-punching process used to add date digits to working dies, and the 1908-D represents one of the final years of the series before the Winged Liberty Head design replaced it in 1916.
