Description
Two vessels three centuries apart face each other on HK-348. The obverse shows a battleship with "Virginia" on a ribbon above it, inside a center circle lettered "Jamestown Exposition" above and 1907 below. The reverse puts a sailing ship in the same setting, again under a ribbon reading "Virginia," with the exposition's name and 1607. The pairing suits a fair that was built around a naval celebration: foreign war fleets put on demonstrations through the season, and the grounds at Sewell's Point fronted on Hampton Roads. Hibler and Kappen list this design under the heading of Battleship Virginia dollars, and it is the only silver-plated piece in that group, measuring 37 mm. It belongs to the Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition, held in Norfolk County, Virginia, in 1907.
