Description

The Mint ran an exhibit at the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, and the official medals, including this silver-plated bronze HK-345, were struck there on the grounds. The site was Sewell's Point, seven miles north of Norfolk, about 340 acres with a long frontage on Hampton Roads, ground that later became a United States naval base; Jamestown Island itself lies some 30 miles up the James River. The medal pairs a left-facing bust of Pocahontas, inside the legend "Ter-Centennial of the Settlement of Jamestown" and the dates 1607--1907, with a reverse of ships in a center circle and the landing of John Smith's expedition dated May 13, 1607. It is 34 mm, the size of the silver HK-344, and is a bronze piece coated in silver; plain bronze is HK-346.
