1907 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1902, PLAIN EDGE
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1907 Indian Head eagle pattern with a plain edge variant is cataloged under PCGS number 1902 with a plain edge designation distinguishing it from the standard reeded-edge strikings. The plain edge format omits the reeded (grooved) edge treatment that would appear on production eagles, creating a smooth, uninterrupted edge surface. Plain edge strikings of gold denomination patterns served as experimental pieces to evaluate the design independent of the edge finish, and they may represent early test strikes made before reeded-edge collars were prepared. The obverse carries Saint-Gaudens' incuse Indian Head Liberty wearing the iconic feathered war bonnet, while the reverse displays the standing eagle on arrows with olive branch. The plain edge gives the coin a noticeably different hand feel from reeded-edge versions and would have been immediately identifiable as a non-production piece, which was the intent — distinguishing experimental strikings from coins destined for circulation. This variety documents one of the many specific configurations tested during the 1907 gold coinage redesign program.
