1907 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - Small Letters, Gold
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
The small letters variety of the 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle pattern in gold features E PLURIBUS UNUM rendered in more compact, refined characters on the coin's edge. Compared to the large letters variant, the small letters version presents a more restrained, elegant edge treatment with characters that occupy less of the available edge space. This more conservative approach to the edge lettering proved more practical for mass production, as smaller letters required less precise collar alignment and were less prone to incomplete striking or die damage during high-speed coinage operations. The transition from large to small edge lettering was one of several practical modifications that Chief Engraver Charles Barber advocated as necessary compromises to make Saint-Gaudens' design suitable for commercial production. The obverse displays Saint-Gaudens' striding Liberty holding a torch and olive branch with rays of sunlight radiating behind her, while the reverse shows the magnificent eagle soaring above a rising sun. The small letters format ultimately informed the edge treatment adopted for the production high relief and Arabic numerals versions that entered circulation in 1907.
