Description

This 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle pattern in gold features the large letters variety of edge lettering, with E PLURIBUS UNUM rendered in prominently sized raised characters around the coin's edge. The large letter format creates bold, easily legible edge text that complements the high-relief design of the coin's faces. President Theodore Roosevelt's vision for the double eagle extended to every aspect of the coin's design including the edge treatment, and the choice between large and small lettering was one of many aesthetic decisions tested through pattern strikings. The large letters variety produces a more commanding visual presence on the edge, with each character standing in higher relief and occupying more of the available edge space. Saint-Gaudens himself favored bold, sculptural treatments throughout his work, and the large letters approach is consistent with his artistic philosophy of maximum visual impact. The obverse carries the striding Liberty design that Saint-Gaudens adapted from his 1903 Roosevelt inaugural medal, while the reverse features the soaring eagle that would become one of the most iconic images in American coinage. This gold striking represents the intended final composition for the denomination.

Rarity Notes

R-7 to R-8 (Extremely Rare). Gold pattern strikings from the Saint-Gaudens redesign are among the most sought-after American numismatic rarities, with individual specimens commanding six- and seven-figure prices.
