1907 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-1778a/1910
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-1778a is a composition or die state variant of the J-1778 double eagle pattern from the 1907 Saint-Gaudens series. The "a" suffix in the Judd numbering system indicates a distinct striking from the base J-1778 variety, typically differing in metal composition, die state, or edge treatment. This variant carries PCGS catalog number 1910, placing it within the broader sequence of 1907 double eagle experimental strikings. The obverse features Saint-Gaudens' majestic striding Liberty holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol dome visible in the distant background and rays of sunlight radiating behind the figure. The reverse displays an eagle soaring above a radiant sun, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS around the border. Like all 1907 Saint-Gaudens double eagle patterns, this piece represents a specific experimental configuration tested during the extensive trial-and-error process of converting Saint-Gaudens' sculptural masterwork into a mass-producible coin. Chief Engraver Barber oversaw the technical execution of these experiments even as he privately opposed the artistic direction Roosevelt had mandated.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8 (Extremely Rare). Die state and composition variants of the 1907 patterns are individually very rare.
